How to Interview Candidates for Passion and Cultural Fit

How to Interview Candidates for Passion and Cultural FitHow to Interview Candidates for Passion and Cultural FitHow to Interview Candidates for Passion and Cultural Fit WaldropA resume sums up a job candidates experience, but it takes an interview to truly gauge a candidates cultural fit.As a recruiter, my first verbal interactions with candidates is often by telephone. While the first impression is often lasting, there have been times when the beginning of a phone interview doesnt grab me. But, as a candidate and I get to know each other, Im often singing a different tune at the end of the call.Thats because we already have one common denominator the company. I want to hire the best person to do the job. The applicant wants to join the team. We both speak the same language, regardless of age, gender, national origin, or the holidays if any we celebrate in December.Heres how you can conduct an interview to assess whether the candidate will be a good fit for your companys culture a nd has the passion of your top performer.A Basic Aptitude for Working with OthersIts during the interview process when a hiring manager can predict if an applicant is a cultural fit within an organization on a very basic level. An employer wants everybody to get along, feel comfortable with each other, share mutual work ethics, and be on the same page, according to Tony Beshara, Ph.D, president of Babich Associates, a placement and recruitment firm in Dallas.Beshara says that this is when an applicants personality, values, and energy shows through. Its a time to ask yourself whether or not he or she is likely to see things in the same way as others within the company. The truth is, this is work, and its amazing how people in different generations can get along and do well in their work without wanting to go to happy hour together, says Beshara. The answers to interview questions are clues to an applicants cultural fit within a company. To assess whether someone has an aptitude for wor king with others, Beshara recommends starting with a simple question, such as, Give us an example of someone you worked well with. Applicants should give specific instances not generalizations.Finding Passion and Cultural Fit is KeySourcing the right candidate is an important element of putting your geschftliches miteinander plan into place.Identifying the candidates cultural fit and passion for the industry during the interview is a key factor in the long term success of a company, says Anisha Vinjamuri, CEO and Founder of InnovationsIQ, a management consulting firm in Seattle. You can teach technology skills, but you can never teach the type of personality that would be most ideal to a company, says Vinjamuri.A sincere passion for the job is an important as the right cultural fit. While you are hiring for culture, a good practice is to evaluate if your candidate is also passionate about the role, and the industry in general, says Vinjamuri. Pay attention to whether or not he or she shows great interest, emotion, and enthusiasm when describing situations in the workplace.A best practice is to make a note of the areas of a conversation when the interviewee shows increased enthusiasm, says Vinjamuri.Great services and products are built on the right foundation of people, so its very important to follow a process that enables success, according to Vinjamuri. She suggests first identifying your companys core DNA, then defining a recruiting strategy to identify the right fit.Lastly, divide the interview process into two parts in the first, focus on technical capabilities the second half should focus on cultural fit by askingInterviewQuestionWhat attributes do you look for in a company when you want to apply for a position? Your Analysis Are the candidates personal core values in alignment with the company?Interview QuestionWhat does your ideal role looks like? Elaborate on the type of environment in which you would function with enthusiasm and contribute positivel y to our team.Your AnalysisWill the team and environment suit the candidates needs?InterviewQuestionDescribe a challenging situation you have faced recently at work, and how you tackled it.Your Analysis This question clarifies the candidates performance style under pressure and their soft skills.InterviewQuestionShare a hypothetical situation with a current similar challenge in your organization what was the best solution?Your Analysis Reveals the candidates thought process, and how it aligns with your companys current management style.Interviewing for Current and Future FitKeep in mind that new employees can maintain or modify a companys culture.Look at both your current and desired organizational cultures, says Michael Fritsch, president of Confoe, a consulting firm in Austin, TX. Often, organizations have not taken a deliberate look at culture prior to starting the hiring process, says Fritsch. If you current culture is exactly where you want it to be, then hire for that, says F ritsch. If not, then your hiring decision can be part of moving your culture forward. For example, if your current culture is too risk-averse and you want to be more risk taking, you would hire candidates who display those traits, says Fritsch. Ask a situational or behavioralinterview question, such as Give me a specific example where you had to take risks in your job.Fritsch recommends asking the candidate about past positions from a culture aspect In your job as XYZ, how did the organization look at risk-taking? Was it better to take risks or follow the rules? Finally, dont forget about sub-cultures. The sub-culture of the quality department is likely different than that of sales or marketing, says Fritsch. Make sure at least a few of your interview questions reflect the subculture of the department that the job will reside in.

Top Recruitment Trends for 2019 and How They Affect Your Job Search

Top Recruitment Trends for 2019 and How They Affect Your Job SearchTop Recruitment Trends for 2019 and How They Affect Your Job SearchAs a company devoted to helping people get hired, we are in constant contact with recruiters. Human resource personnel tell us what they want to see in job applications, and we build these insights into our resume builder.Being surrounded by recruitment experts helps us understand how the job hiring process is subject to change. Like any industry, human resources and recruitment evolves based on technological advancement and shifting employer preferences. What does the future of recruitment look like? Well, we dont exactly have a time machine or crystal ball, but we do have a pretty strong sense of whats coming down the pipe, at least as far as 2019 is concerned. As we turn the page on 2018, and many aspiring workers make finding a new job their New Years resolution, its time for a glimpse of what job seekers will face in the year ahead.Weve asked the experts here are four recruitment trends you should be aware of in 2019.1 Multimedia ApplicationsTheres a good chance youve come across this one before if youve been on the job hunt within the last few years. But in case you havent, get used to the idea of employers demanding mora than just a cover letter and resume as your job application. No, the cover letter and resume arent dying off. They are the pillars of any application and will continue to be your ticket to getting hired. However, additional assets are being recognized as valuable in helping recruiters gauge candidate fitness. For example, more and more employers want to get a sense of a persons soft skills prior to committing to inviting them for an interview. Their solution? Asking for a short introductory video to accompany an application.Candidates are often being asked to compile a 1-2 minute video that answers broad questions like What unique qualities will you bring to this role? or Why are you interested in working f or Company X?.This helps employers assess verbal communication skills and whether a person is aligned with company culture.Speaking of culture, recruiters are also getting in the habit of asking for creative applications that include items like infographics, videos, or dedicated websites that showcase specific skills. This is especially true in fields like marketing or for jobs with technology-driven start-ups.Meanwhile, integrating your social media profiles into your application, for example by including usernames or URLs on your resume, has already become common practice, especially since recruiters are likely to search for you anyway.2 Inbound RecruitingInbound recruiting refers to the marketing efforts that companies undertake to attract top talent to their organization. In the past, the recruitment process typically involved developing a posting for a specific job, advertising that posting, then screening potential hires, and hoping that the right person applies.Yes, many comp anies still follow this process. But many are taking a far more proactive approach, and this is called inbound recruiting. The difference is that with inbound recruiting organizations develop a company brand using a set of marketing tools that will be enticing for both passive and active job seekers. These include career pages that provide a real sense of what its like working for the company and social media profiles that encourage people to engage online with career inquiries. This creates a system for continuously receiving inquiries from attractive candidates, not just when there is an immediate need for a specific position. What does this mean for the average job seeker? Basically, it should serve as motivation to not only look for job postings, but to start your job search by researching the companies that fit with your aspirations and background. From there, you should look to engage with the human resource department at these companies because they are expecting to get inquiries . Send a letter of interest through email or LinkedIn and look to arrange an informational interview.3 Automated Hiring ProcessAutomation is a trend taking over countless industries, all for the sake of added efficiency and precision. As the whole world goes this way, why would recruitment be any different? So, in 2019, you can expect even deeper automation in the hiring process. Considering that employers often receive hundreds of applications for posted positions, its easy to understand why they might have an increased reliance on screening software, such as applicant tracking systems (ATS).Weve said it before, but applying for a job online means a high probability that your application will be filtered based on keywords identified in the job description. Recruitment software packages like ATS are only going to get even more precise. Case in point the king of search, Google, has companies flocking to its hiring tool, Google Hire. Before you click send on your job application, remem ber this keywords, keywords, keywordsIt is also plausible that artificial intelligence (AI) begins to play a role in the interviewing process in 2019. Youre probably not likely to be interviewed by robots, but employers may start video or audio recording interviews to be analyzed through AI in order to arrive at the strongest candidate for a role.4 Blockchain TechnologyIs there a bigger buzzword right now in the tech world than blockchain? Nope.No surprise then that blockchain is being embraced as a technological tool for re-inventing the recruitment process. Dont believe us, check out Job.com or Aworker. The decentralized ledger associated with blockchain is seen as offering job candidates the benefit of greater security of their personal information. After all, who knows what companies do with all that data you enter in their online systems?More importantly, however, is how blockchain has the potential to cut out the middlemen of the hiring process, such as recruitment agencies. N ew online platforms allow job searchers to manage their own secure profiles that cannot be searched or accessed by anyone. Power is handed over to candidates who decide for which companies or roles they wish to share their information.Of course, blockchain for recruiting is a two-way street, so even if you as a job searcher love the idea and want to sign on to one of the emerging platforms, it may take some time for employers to jump on board as well. Lets see how far this goes in 2019.Speaking of which, imagine a world where all of your credentials and work history are recorded and verifiable. This is where blockchain may very well take us.

As Harold journeys through strange new worlds, his lab partner, Nikki, helps him to understand nanoscale forces to get back to full size. Harold must find all the pages of his notebook and all the parts of the broken shrinking machine but first he must stop a tiny alien race, the Nanoids, who have been stealing his technology. This might sound like a plot of a science-fiction film, but it is the storyline for Geckoman, an online video game developed by Northeastern University researchers at the Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing (CHN), with funding from the National Science Foundation and 15 Days LLC, a company founded by Northeastern alumni and faculty. Shortfall, another game developed at Northeastern, teaches students how to run a manufacturing business by balancing suppliers, negotiating contracts, and reviewing sustainability factorsall in a virtual environment. Foldit, developed at the University of Washingtons Center for Game Science, challenges players to learn about the shapes of proteins and compete online to fold them into the most efficient shapes. Quest to Learn, a middle school in Manhattan, extensively uses games for teaching. Waker (top) and Woosh (bottom) are life science and math-based games created by MIT GAMBIT game lab. Image: MIT While educational institutions are considering implementing video games in learning, parents are being cautious about the excess screen time children spend strategizing how to beat the next level of World of Warcraft. So are video games turning children into zombies or can they really be used as an education tool? It is not about what games do, but what they can and would do, says Eric Klopfer, associate professor of education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and director of the MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program (STEP). There are certain facts about science that engineers should know but those facts have much more meaning when you use them to solve problems. Video games challenge players with difficult problems and motivate the players to solve problems, he says. Science Education Video games can enable STEM education from elementary school all the way through college as they teach skills such as analytical thinking, multitasking, strategizing, problem-solving, and team building. Traditional learning has provided superficial learning through text books. Games are best at teaching a deeper level of learning, says Klopfer. His team at MIT builds and design games in life sciences and math for younger kids. They have built several physics-based games, such as Woosh and Waker, in conjunction with the GAMBIT game lab on campus. Our latest initiative is a project, MMOG, a multiplayer online game in collaboration with Gates foundation to teach high-school biology and math, he informs. Busnania says that students have a preference to learn through game play over conventional lecturers and the results of student play tests conducted for Geckoman indicate that they are learning new concepts. The Donahue Institute at the University of Massachusetts did a preliminary evaluation of the game. Three groups of students who played Geckoman were asked to complete content-specific pre-tests before they played the game and post-tests after playing the game. The difference between pre- and post-tests showed that the game was successful in helping students learn the science concepts presented in it. The Next Level Video games represent the kind of interactive and self-paced learning that people see as a future guided by technology. Klopfer says, however, games cant replace traditional teaching methods. I dont think games should be the only component. Games do provide students the opportunity for self-learning but students need guidance and mentorship. The role of the teacher here is not diminished but becomes more challenging and interesting in helping the students to learn with this kind of medium, he explains. According to Klopfer, games are being used more in basic sciences than engineering right now, so theres still opportunity in developing games to teach engineering concepts. A promising new frontier lies in using games-based learning to better prepare students for careers in STEM-related fields. This interactive and entertaining learning, or edutainment, could just be a beginning of the trend. Traditional learning has provided superficial learning through text books. Games are best at teaching a deeper level of learning.Eric Klopfer, associate professor of education, MIT

Why Shenzhen Is Important for Engineering Students

Why Shenzhen Is Important for Engineering Students Why Shenzhen Is Important for Engineering Students Why Shenzhen Is Important for Engineering Students Shenzhen and the surrounding province of Guangdong are the most important places in the world for manufacturing. Theres a good chance that a consumer appliance you own is made there. The Chinese citys non-descript back-alleys are also a hub where manufacturers could get important lessons in rapid prototyping and small-batch production. Shops conceive and build electronics and other products on a shoestring budget. Shenzhen especially is turning into a hub for robotics, with companies like DJI and UBTECH based in the city. Chinese workers assemble electronic components at the Taiwanese technology giant Foxconns factory in Shenzhen. Image: Getty MIT is keen on bringing a taste of Shenzhen to its mechanical engineering students. A two-way partnership between MIT and Shenzhen-based Southern University of Science and Technology will provide students with hands-on experience to see how shops do rapid scale-up of product design. The lessons would range from creating CAD files to producing prototypes on a shoestring budget, without the benefit of cutting- edge technology. Hear Our New Podcast: Building theCase for a Diversified Workforce These Shenzhen shops also provide insight in cutting costs when conceptualizing and designing products. Its an environment unlike any in the world and a great place for engineering students to pick up valuable lessons in converting ideas to products, said Richard Lester, associate provost at MIT. These are important assets and capabilities for our students and faculty to learn about, Lester says. For MIT students its a sort of an on-the-ground ability to observe and learn about the capabilities. The focus will be on electronics, materials and energy technology, and could expand to other emerging technologies. The U.S. currently is at odds with China on trade, but Lester said that wont disrupt the partnership. Shenzhen shops have also played a role in bringing smartphone and tablet prices down, and components and sensors for products like autonomous cars and robots can be acquired at lower cost. The valuable lessons will be important in building a manufacturing business and doing business in emerging markets like China or India, where the middle-income markets are growing so fast. In the course of their careers, those markets will likely be increasingly important. Its not just the manufacturing capabilities, its also the capabilities for innovation, Lester says. This is how to have a long awesome life 7 secrets from research

This is how to have a long awesome life 7 secrets from research This is how to have a long awesome life 7 secrets from research There are plenty of ways to make your life a little better. But making your life longer is trickier. Does any of that anti-aging stuff work? Let’s ask an expert…Thomas T. Perls, M.D., M.P.H, is the director of the New England Centenarian Study, and an associate professor of medicine and geriatrics at Boston University’s med school. What  say you, Tom?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!A good start to adding more good years to your life would be to get rid of the anti-aging quackery. … These guys are just trying to sell you stuff. What does work is living the lifestyle of those who we know are living longer, like those people, I suppose, living in the Blue Zones.Ouch. No magic pill to prevent aging. But what did he say at the end there? What the heck is a “Blue Zone”? Gimme a sec while I put my research hat on…A while back a bunch of demographers published a  pape r  in the journal  Experimental Gerontology  about a place in the Barbagia region of Sardinia where people lived exceptionally long, healthy lives. (They circled it on the map with a blue pen and the name “Blue Zone” stuck.) Well,  some  place has to have the people who live the longest, right? Just random…Actually, no. Because they started to find other Blue Zones. Areas where people were up to three times more likely to live to 100 than the average American. And they didn’t just live long - they lived well. Healthier. Happier. Fewer diseases. More energy. Hmm.  Care to take a quick trip around the world with me? (We’ll have separate hotel rooms, I promise.)Okinawa, Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world. Their rate of cardiovascular disease is 20% that of the US. Breast and prostate cancer? 25% as often. And dementia is one-third as likely.Men from Nicoya, a peninsula off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, have twice the chance of making it to age 90 as men fr om the US, France, or Japan. It took them a while to even realize this was a Blue Zone because life expectancy is so low in neighboring countries that mortality studies didn’t even bother to  ask  if anyone lived past 80.In Loma Linda - just 60 miles outside Los Angeles - people live more than 7 years longer than the average Californian. When researchers interviewed a woman  there she told them a story about when her father got gored by a bull. Cool story but what’s cooler is that the event happened  107 years ago. Lydia just turned 112.What the heck is going on in these places? We know magic pills don’t work. Must be due to good genes, right?  Wrong:Scientific studies suggest that only about 25 percent of how long we live is dictated by genes, according to famous studies of Danish twins. The other 75 percent is determined by our lifestyles and the everyday choices we make. It follows that if we optimize our lifestyles, we can maximize our life expectancies within our biolog ical limits. So demographers, doctors, and scientists collaborated with the National Institute on Aging to  get to the bottom of this, analyzing what these groups ate, how much exercise they got, how they socialized, etc. These are very different places with very different people - but they found patterns. Much of the data is correlational. We can’t just say “do this and you’ll live to 100.” There’s no magic formula. But certain activities, behaviors and rituals came up again and again that seem to point to lessons that might help us all live  longer, healthier, happier lives.Ready, Methuselah?  Let’s get to it …Inconvenience yourselfA better header would have been, “Exercise.” But if I said that, you wouldn’t do it. And, to be totally honest here, the Blue Zone people (if I say “Blue People” you might think I mean Smurfs) never deliberately exercise either. But they move. A lot. Their lives are more active - but not in an “Aw, crap, now I have to put on my Nikes and go to Zumba class” kinda way. Activity is built into their day. From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:… they engage in regular, low-intensity physical activity, often as part of a daily work routine. Male centenarians in Sardinia’s Blue Zone worked most of their lives as shepherds, a profession that involved miles of hiking every day. Okinawans garden for hours each day, growing food for their tables. Adventists take nature walks. So don’t worry about the gym. But engage in activities you enjoy. Or just make your life a little less convenient. Take the stairs. Don’t drive when you can walk.(To learn more about how you and your children can lead a successful life, check out my bestselling book  here.)Now we all know that eating is key to health and longevity. So let’s learn a very helpful concept that is easy to use but kinda tricky to say …Hara Hachi BuNo, not Hakuna Matata. “Hara Hachi Bu”  is a Japane se phrase uttered numerous times a day in the Blue Zone of Okinawa. From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:All of the old folks say it before they eat. It means ‘Eat until you are 80 percent full.’The researchers never met a  centenarian who was on a diet. They never met one that was obese. And again, genetics were not the primary factor here. They didn’t overeat. This helps keep blood pressure and cholesterol under control, reducing the chance of heart disease.(To learn the 4 harsh truths that will make you a better person, click  here.)Eating less is good - but what should you eat?Plant slantNobody in the history of the world has ever said, “Eating more green veggies is a bad idea.”Most Blue Zone diets were vegetarian or close to it. Meat was eaten rarely. From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:Beans, whole grains, and garden vegetables are the cornerstones of all t hese longevity diets. Sardinian shepherds take semolina flatbread into the pastures with them. Nicoyans eat corn tortillas at every meal. And whole grain is part of the Adventist diet. Whole grains deliver fiber, antioxidants, potential anti-cancer agents (insoluble fiber), cholesterol reducers, and clot blockers, plus essential minerals. Beans (legumes) also provide a cornerstone to Blue Zone meals. Diets rich in legumes are associated with fewer heart attacks and less colon cancer. Legumes are a good dietary source of healthy flavonoids and fiber (which can reduce the risk of heart attack) and are also an excellent nonanimal source of protein.I didn’t say *I* think you need to be a vegetarian; I’m just telling you what  this  research said. Paleo preachers, stand down. Now there was one thing that deserves special note because it’s the closest thing we have to a magic pill and, frankly, it surprised the heck out of me. Even the FDA said, “Um, yeah, we’re really having tro uble arguing with that data. Fine. We’ll kinda say something nice about it.”And the magic food is, well… nuts. Not crazy. Nuts like actual nuts. From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:Recent findings from a large study of (the Loma Linda Blue Zone) show that those who ate nuts at least five times a week had a rate of heart disease that was half that of those who rarely ate nuts. A health claim about nuts is among the first qualified claims permitted by the Food and Drug Administration. In 2003, the FDA allowed a “qualified health claim” that read: “Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.”The researchers sliced the data up every way they could think and still, it showed nuts profoundly impact health and longevity.  You look at this very impressive chart, I’m gonna go buy so me almonds:And Blue Zoners like their booze. A glass or two of good red wine per day got the thumbs up from the researchers.(To learn how to deal with passive-aggressive people, click  here.)Alright, we’re nuts about nuts. But if you want to be a full-on Blue Zoner, don’t just shove some in your mouth as you hastily respond to emails and rush out the door …DownshiftNicoyans take a break every afternoon to rest and socialize with friends. The Seventh-day Adventists of Loma Linda take Saturday as a sabbath. The little old ladies of Okinawa gather every day at 3:30 PM to gossip in traditional social groups known as “moai.”From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:Italian endocrinologist Dr. Claudio Franceschi has developed a widely accepted theory on the relationship between chronic inflammation and aging. Over time, he believes, the negative effects of inflammation build up to create conditions in the body that may promote a ge-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Slowing life’s pace may help keep the chronic inflammation in check, and theoretically, the related disease at bay.Designate a time to take it easy. To turn off the smartphone notifications. But being on your own too much is more Red Zone than Blue Zone. (Or maybe it’s a Gray Area?)  Anyway  â€¦BelongDr. Ilias Leriadis, the vice mayor of the Blue Zone of Ikaria, said the island  â€œis not a ‘me’ place. It’s an ‘us’ place.”And that was another constant among all of these spots where people forget to die: Family. Religion. Community. From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:Professor Lisa Berkman of Harvard University has investigated social connectedness and longevity. In one study, she looked at the impact of marital status, ties with friends and relatives, club membership, and level of volunteerism on how well older people aged. Over a nine-year period, she found that those with the most social connectedness lived longer. What’s a good way to get more connected? Rituals. Weekly family dinners. Celebrating holidays. Consistently scheduled get togethers. The most incredible story about Blue Zone community would have to be that of Stamatis Moraitis.  He was born in the Blue Zone of Ikaria but moved to the US as an adult. At 65 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and given six months to live.He refused chemo, in fact, he refused any treatment at all. He had lived a good life. He decided to return to his homeland to die.Though weak, he fell in with the rituals of the island. He went to church. He drank wine with old friends. All the while he was counting down the days until he would be buried next to his parents under the oak trees by the blue Aegean Sea …And then, somehow, thirty-five years went by. He didn’t die. He was 100-years-old. Don’t buy your ticket to Greece just yet - spontaneous cancer remission is far from a common occurrence. In fact, the Blue Zone researchers where so shocked by it they asked him what happened to his cancer. He didn’t know. He had gone back to America at one point to get checked out but he got no answers …His doctors had all passed away.(To learn the nine rituals that will make you an amazing parent, click  here.)Belonging is key, and it makes for a happier life. So what’s the most powerful Blue Zone secret of them all? The one that ensures the others work?Don’t zone aloneBelonging in terms of family and religion is great but what makes the Blue Zones so powerful is that everyone supports this same lifestyle. It’s easy to eat a certain way when everyone does. This doesn’t mean you need to go convert everyone around you but, um, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea if you had a few buddies for your Blue Zone journey, would it?From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:Seventh-day Adventists make a point of associating with one another (a practice reinforced by their religious practices and observation of the Sabbath on Saturdays). Sardinians have been isolated geographically in the Nuoro highlands for 2,000 years. As a result, members of these longevity cultures work and socialize with one another, and this reinforces the prescribed behaviors of their cultures. It’s much easier to adopt good habits when everyone around you is already practicing them.If you want to live longer, share this post with a friend. Walk together. Eat right together. Downshift together. And don’t forget the nuts.(To learn how to deal with out-of-control kids - from hostage negotiators - click  here.)Okay, we’ve learned a lot. Yes, this post was long but you’re going to live a l ot longer now so I feel no guilt whatsoever.Let’s round it all up and learn reason number seven - which may be the most profound of them all …Sum upThis is how to live a long, awesome life: Inconvenience Yourself: Build more movement into your day. Take the stairs, not the escalator. Don’t use the phone, go see a friend. If you want French Press coffee, walk to France. Hara Hachi Bu: Eat until you’re 80% full. (The people of Okinawa seem pretty cool and I don’t think they’ll mind if you culturally appropriate this concept for the purposes of death prevention.) Plant Slant: More veggies. Nuts are the Infinity Stones of longevity eating, Thanos. Downshift: I’m not writing a description for this. I deserve a siesta. Taking it easy will extend my life so I can write more blog posts later. Belong: In the Blue Zone of Ikaria, there is no word for “privacy.” Now I do enjoy my privacy - but being so supported and loved that you don’t even bother to create a word for being alone is pretty cool too. Don’t Zone Alone:  Start a “Blue Man Group” - sans face paint. Surrounding yourself with others who follow some of the Blue Zone ideas will make living longer easier and more fun. So what’s number 7?Purpose in life.Ask yourself, “Why do I wake up in the morning?” If it’s a good reason, you’ll probably have a lot more mornings ahead of you. From  The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest:Okinawans call it ikigai, and Nicoyans call it plan de vida, but in both cultures the phrase essentially translates to “why I wake up in the morning.” The strong sense of purpose possessed by older Okinawans may act as a buffer against stress and help reduce their chances of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, and stroke. Dr. Robert Butler and collaborators led an NIH-funded study that looked at the correlation between having a sense of purpose and longevity. His 11-year study followed highly functioning people between the ages of 65 and 92 and found that individuals who expressed a clear goal in life - something to get up for in the morning, something that made a difference- lived longer and were sharper t han those who did not …Your purpose in life doesn’t have to be something epic like single-handedly solving global warming. It can be as simple as meaningful work, a hobby you’re passionate about or just wanting to make sure those grandchildren reach their full potential. And that last one isn’t just something I randomly came up with. It’s a true story the researchers came across during their travels…Nona wasn’t doing well. She had just celebrated her 100th birthday when she fell ill. She could not get out of bed. Her daughter, Pietrina, thought this might be the end.Pietrina summoned the entire family - 4 daughters and 13 grandkids. Some of them had to come in from mainland Italy. Nona’s condition worsened. She lay in bed unconscious.Pietrina’s nephew, who had been flunking out of college, sat at his grandmother’s bedside whispering to her how much he was going to miss her …And Nona’s eyes popped open. In her native Sardinian she snapped:I’m not going  anyw here  until you’re done with the university!Nona recovered. And  her grandson graduated.  Sometimes all we need to keep living is a purpose. And take it from Nona: there is no better purpose than making sure the ones we love are doing well.Join over 320,000 readers.  Get a free weekly update via email  here. This article first appeared on Barking Up The Wrong Tree. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people This is how to have a long awesome life 7 secrets from research There are plenty of ways to make your life a little better. Yes, this post was long but you’re going to live a lot longer now so I feel no guilt whatsoever.Let’s round it all up and learn reason number seven - which may be the most profound of them all …Sum upThis is how to live a long, awesome life: Inconvenience Yourself: Build more movement into your day.

Dont Hire Your First Freelance Employee Without Reading This

Don’t Hire Your First Freelance Employee Without Reading This Don’t Hire Your First Freelance Employee Without Reading This With more than 53 million  Americans taking on freelance work, it’s safe to say that the freelancing industry is booming. This is good news for both freelancers defined as non-full-time, non-part-time, non-contract workers who take assignments on an as needed and as negotiated basis and businesses, as working with freelancers comes with a number of benefits: You pay for the freelancer’s expertise, not the overhead. You can use as little or as much of the freelancer’s time as you need. You can quickly change gears if a relationship doesn’t work out or if priorities change. If this sounds like what you need, you might be ready to hire your first freelancer. Here are four tips for finding and hiring a freelancer without the headache: Find freelancers through your network Each industry features several online hot-spot hubs of freelance talent that are easily sourced with a quick web search. However, the most efficient way to find a freelancer who will be a good fit for your budget and your organization is to find one through your personal and professional network. Not only will that guarantee you’re working with someone who has an active interest in doing their best work for you (after all, you already have an acquaintance in common), but you’re also securing a freelancer who does good enough work that they get referred.       Be open to alternative pricing Depending on the industry in which you work and the type of work you need to have done, freelancer pricing can vary from an hourly rate to a per-word rate to a project rate. If you’re not sure how much a project should cost, start with the value of the outcome of the project in mind, then build a budget based on what you can afford to invest. Ask the freelancer to design a package or deliverable that meets that budget and go from there. While it might be tempting to dip into bottom-of-the-barrel options you’ll find on “freelancer farms,” you will often get what you paid for. If the project is important, plan to invest in it. Be clear about what you want Before you hire a freelancer to get the job done, make sure you identify what, exactly, the job is. Are you looking for a consultant or strategist who can walk you through the why and the how of what you need to do? Or are you looking to complete a specific task? When you’re screening freelancers, make sure you outline exactly what you want to get out of the relationship (for example, a new website that drives leads or three blog posts per month) so that they will know if they are right for the job. Set expectations for your working relationship Since freelancers often work virtually, you need to be intentional about getting up to speed with your working relationship. If you expect to communicate mostly by email, phone or live Skype sessions, make sure you say so up front. If you need to hear back from them within 24 business hours, make sure it’s in your contract. Seeing eye-to-eye on these day-to-day details will make it easier for both you and the freelancer to relax within the relationship.

For Better or for Worse - How to Help Your Partner Through Job Hunts

For Better or for Worse - How to Help Your Partner Through Job Hunts For Better or for Worse - How to Help Your Partner Through Job Hunts When one half of a couple is out of work, it requires extra effort from both to keep the household on the move. The “for better or worse” vow has been put to the test during the past few years as millions of couples’ relationships have been affected by long periods of joblessness. While the burden of unemployment is certainly stressful for the person who has lost a job, it also represents huge new responsibilities for a spouse who still has a job. One of the biggest is bringing home a paycheck while supporting your partner in the search for a new job. This role requires patience, a positive attitude and flexibility - as well as generosity with your network.Monica Wright and her husband, Tim, have experienced this firsthand. Tim lost his job as a morning radio host in August. Monica, a search marketing executive, lost her job two months later but was fortunate to land another full-time position shortly thereafter.Tim has not been so lucky, and the couple’s lives have changed su bstantially as a result. While searching for a job, Tim stays home and takes care of the couple’s two children, ages 4 and 10. Monica works her full-time job and freelances to help make up for Tim’s lost salary. She estimates that she works an average of 60 hours a week.Monica said the situation has not been easy, but she realizes that both she and Tim are doing what needs to be done to keep the family and each other afloat. “It’s been tough. … We sort of fell into assumed roles,” she said. “I’ve got to work, so I can’t necessarily spend time doing things such as calling the tax guy or following up on personal things or taking the kids to the dentist. It’s a little stressful on my end, where I don’t spend as much down time, and I’m afraid of burnout. But it is what it is right now.”Acknowledgment and acceptance, as well as compromise and collaboration, are key to keeping a relationship healthy, said Dr. John Duffy, a clinical psychologist, certified life co ach and author of ” The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Tweens and Teens “. “Couples need to work together through the challenge, and often crisis, of job change, to ensure they are allied with one another,” Duffy said. “They also need to tend to their relationship by spending some time talking about something other than the job search, and enjoying one another.”The longer a person is away from the routine of the workforce (and the more rejections one receives), the more difficult it can be to maintain motivation. This is where the employed spouse also comes in, say experts - providing advice, perspective and, when needed, cheerleading.Keep Your Spouse Connected“Encourage the spouse as much as possible to stay out there, keep networking and remain connected with the professional community,” said Deb Brown, a business coach and licensed psychologist. “People who are depressed are often tempted to withdraw, which is one of the worst things a job seeke r can do.”That connection to a professional community should apply not only to the job seeker’s network but to the employed spouse’s network, as well, said career experts who spoke with Ladders. Even if you are not in the same industry as your partner, you never know which one of your contacts knows someone who knows someone who is. The trick, experts add, is to be able to clearly articulate your partner’s skills and experience in a professional manner - something that can be difficult to do, to be sure, when there is so much emotional baggage attached to the situation.“Serve as an advocate for your spouse by actively networking among friends and family,” said Roy Cohen, career coach and author of ” The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide “. “But don’t do so out of fear or desperation. Be clear on what your spouse does professionally and how to best explain it. Your messaging will make a difference if it’s clear, concise, and not fear-based.”Monica W right opened up her professional network to her husband and said it resulted in a few follow-ups. She admits, though, that the opportunities seem to be scarce given the nature of her husband’s work.Indeed, in the radio industry, a new job often means a new market - a move the Wrights are not sure they want to make at this time. Tim has been exploring new professional options for the “next phase” of his professional life, a process Monica is supporting.“It’s been about giving him space and being supportive in terms of providing ideas and access to a network,” she said. “I don’t get resentful. I like what I do for work. It’s not like I’m digging trenches. He just needs to figure out what he wants to do for the next phase, and I just give him the tools. … We’re just trying to make it all work out.”

What is the maximum term for which I can make the Lease Assignment? There is no statutory limit, but the assignment cannot exceed the remaining duration of the Master Lease's term. As the Assignee, can I assign the lease to someone else?Usually the Assignee cannot further assign the lease without the written consent of the Landlord. Who should sign the Lease Assignment Agreement? Both the Assignor and Assignee must sign the agreement, and it is strongly recommended that at least 2 witnesses also sign it. I do not know when the Lease Assignment will be signed. Can I fill in the date later?Yes, by selecting 'Unsure' as the date the agreement will be signed, a blank line will be inserted into the contract so that you can add the correct date after printing the document.

7 Resume Words You Should Never Use

7 Resume Words You Should Never Use 7 Resume Words You Should Never Use In case you are confused, let me tell you that resume words do make a significant difference in your chances of getting selected. Ever heard of the saying “First impression is the last impression”. Then, you definitely don’t want to create a negative first impression of you on the recruiters. For that you better avoid the following resume words. Personal Pronouns Use of words like ‘I’, ‘me’ or ‘my’ in your resume make you look extremely unprofessional. Rather than starting the sentences with ‘I’ or ‘my’, it is always a better idea to omit them from all of your sentences. Otherwise, this may hinder your chances of getting an interview. Negative Words We know that using negative words, anywhere it may be, leaves a bad impression of you on others. The same can be said for a resume. Writing negative sentences doesn’t help you at all, rather sometimes it may reduce your chances in getting the job. Punctual It is one of the fundamental criteria that you should fulfill no matter what kind of job you are applying for. Or at least the company counts it as a necessity. That is why, there is no need for you to mention this explicitly in your resume. The company may think you are using this because you have nothing else to say about yourself. Hard worker Another one of the words that the company doesn’t want you to write explicitly. They expect you to work hard if you are getting a job. Writing this resume word will only make your resume look long and boring. Ambitious You may have written this word to emphasize that you are not lazy, but this resume word can act as a double-edged sword. The company may think that your ambitious behavior will make you quit their company for a better one. As such, you can never become a loyal employee. For your own good, it is best to avoid it. MS Office A resume should only include only the relevant skills for the job you are applying for. Writing anything else is basically a waste of time and space. And including MS Office as a skill of yours is definitely inappropriate. Because, it is not a skill that makes you stand out, but a necessity that every company wants. References available by request Including this resume word is pretty much useless. Because it is a given, that if they are interested, they will ask for references. And you will provide them with all that. So there is no need for you to state the obvious.

Phone Interview Survival Tips

Phone Interview Survival Tips Phone Interview Survival Tips Phone Interview Survival Tips Apparently, a memo went out recently to writers in the career space, declaring this the Week of the Phone Interview. OK, not really. But I've seen two excellent posts on the topic this week, so I'm hopping on the bandwagon. The phone interview (more aptly called a phone screen) is becoming more and more popular as the first step in the hiring process. If you haven't had one yet, you will, so it's essential to get yourself primed and ready before the phone rings. A phone screen is similar to a regular interview. A lot of the questions are the same. Both help employers judge how well you communicate and whether you've done your homework. But there's one big difference: Phone screens are meant to screen people out; regular interviews are meant to screen someone in. It's much faster and cheaper for an employer to phone 10 or 15 maybe candidates than to meet them all in person. The phone-screening process weeds out the people who sound good on paper butfor whatever reasondon't strike the screener as a good match for the job. Only the short list of candidates who survive the phone screen will get to interview face to face. And as we all know, you can't get a job without an interview. Anyway, as I mentioned, the two recent posts I read about phone interviews were excellent. If you want to be a survivor, rather than a casualty, of your next phone screen, I highly recommend you read them (click the title to see the full post): Don't wear pajamas for a phone interview, from Fortune.com's Ask Annie. Fifteen handy tips for making a great phone impressioneverything from use a landline and disable call waiting to eat a cough drop before the call.
